Today as a club we would like to express our deepest sympathy to the Fitzgibbon Family on the loss of Tom who will be a great loss to his wife Maureen, his family and friends our Club and Parish.
As life long servant and valued member of this club his commitment and enthusiasm never wavered. His life long commitment to the everyday running of our club saw him lead the parade with the Liam McCarthy cup as it returned to Killeagh in 99 and our rise from the junior ranks to senior made him a proud Killeagh man and father. He also represented us at East Cork and County Board level and for the last number of years was President of our Club and a few short weeks ago he attended and participated in our A.G.M. Someone we can all learn from. May he Rest In Peace.

JUNIOR A FOOTBALL LEAGUE FINAL:
Glenbower Rovers 4-08 Lisgoold 0-08
Our footballers ended the year on a winning note in Pairc Ui Chinneide, Killeagh on Sunday evening by winning the Patrick O'Mahony Memorial trophy. Both teams had an outstanding season, both unbeaten in the league. That was until the final game of the season. Poor weather conditions hampered what should have been a good game of football. But credit to both sides for an enjoyable game of football so late in the year. Lisgoold opened the scoring but points from Joe Deane and Ger Collins and goals from Andy Walsh and Joe Deane saw us go in at the break 2-4 to 0-5. Lisgoold hit a purple patch in the opening of the second half notching up another 3 points which could have been more except for some great defending by our defence. Then we found a rhythm again. Some well executed points from Padraig McCarthy, Joe Deane, John O'Connor and Stephen Murphy extended our lead before Brian Collins goaled twice to put it beyond Lisgoold's reach. Joe Deane accepted the trophy on behalf of Glenbower Rovers. Congratulations to all involved, silverware for the dinnerdance.

9/11/09

In the Senior Hurling League Semi Final last Tuesday night we travelled to Riverstown to take on Sars, with key players not available on the night it was always going to be an up hill battle, but battle we did with nothing between us in the opening exchanges. Sars hit a purple patch and notched up 1-12 to our 5 points, we opened the second half brighly with three unanswered points. Things were beginning to look up, however Sars were not going to let a league final show down with Newtown slip through their fingers and added another nine points to their tally. In the closing stages we found the net twice and raised the white flag once more. Final score: Sars 1-21 Killeagh 2 -09. Well done lads on a great years hurling.

JUNIOR A League Hurling Final
We played Dungourney on Saturday in the League Final in poor conditions and against a strong wind. In the opening half we failed to register a single score to their five points. We started brightly in the second half and started to close the gap and came to within two points at one stage and looked like we might steal it but a Dungourney attack rattled the Killeagh net and try as we may we couldnt claw it back and it finished on a scoreline of Dungourney 1-10 Killeagh 0-07. Well done to all concerned throughout the year.

Abernathy Cup - On Saturday evening last our senior hurling team took on Cloyne in the final of the Abernathy Cup. This competition is run by the East Cork Juveniles Board to raise much need funds for our under age divisional teams so its nice to see that the seniors take an interest in the stars of the future.
With a leauge semi final against Sars coming up this game for the lads this was a measure of where we were at not to mention friendly local rivalry, pride of parish and all that goes with winning any trophy.
Against a strong breeze in the opening half Joe Deane opened our account from a 40 yard free before Cloyne responded with a goal. The lads settled and points came from Joe Deane, Larry Collins, Paudraig McCarthy, Sean Long and Joe Budds while our defence worked tirelessy to repel any Cloyne attack. The loss of Brendan Barry due to injury unsettled us momentarily but we managed to go in at the break 0-8 to 1-2 up. The second half was by no means a classic and unfortunetly saw tempers flare on several on occasions to see James Birmingham flash four red cards. When play resumed Joe Deane and Andy Walsh added two points a piece before Joe Budds slipped in behind the Cloyne defence to put himself in a one on one situation with Donal Og. He made no mistake firing it to the left corner of the net. That was to be the final nail in the coffin. Captain Paudraig McGrath accepted the Abernathy Cup from Regina Abernathy, Chairperson of the East Cork Juvenile Board.

GLENBOWER ROVERS
Our junior B footballers bowed out of this years championship in Cobh last Wednesday night to Glenville who proved too strong on the night. There was never much between both sides for long periods of the game to which scores were very hard to come by but the Glenville outfit found the range in the second half and just shaded it in the end. Glenbower rovers 2-02 Glenville 1-07.

SENIOR HURLING- Abernathy cup. Sunday afternoon we travelled to Rathcormack to play Bride Rovers in the semi final of the Abernathy Cup. While its late in the season and there are very few clubs still hurling our lad still have the appetite for it. While we had met the Bride for our championship opener many might have taught that this might have a bit of an edge to it but alas no, with a league semi final coming up our lads went at it like the championship game of the Summer. From the off the Killeagh boys meant business rattling the net twice and slotting over nine great points to Bride Rovers 1-04. We approached the second half in exactly the same way this time our mid field and defence were outstanding conceding just a single point to our forwards one eight. Final score Killeagh 3-17 bride rovers 1-05.

FIXTURES- Abernathy Cup , Killeagh vs Cloyne some time over bank holiday weekend. No date or venue at hand keep an eye on the website.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: On friday night last we travelled to to dungorney with a small band of vocal suporters to see if we could advance to the quarter final stages of the competition. The opening half ebbed and flowed both sides guilty of wayward wides. We went three points clear before Dungorney scored 1-1 in quick succession and we tacked on two more before the break. Killeagh 0-5 to Dungorney 1-1 at half time. Someone must have given them a good talking to at half time as we emerged a different team. One of the younger members of the team Joe Budds opened our goal scoring account and we tacked on another 7 points in the second half. But all was not over with the emergence of young at heart team member Noel Long known as the football head to many in Killeagh. Only 5 minutes on the park was on the receiving end of a pass from John Walsh, never panicked and slotted it into the right hand corner of the net and we emerged victorious on the night. Well done to all concerned.

Hard luck to our minor A footballers who were beaten on the day by Erins Own in the A final in Lisgoold on Saturday evening in front of a small group of supporters on a score line of Erins Own 1.10 Killeagh Ita's 1.05. Junior A East Cork Football Final!
On Sunday evening next at 6pm in Youghal our local heroes Glenbower Rovers will challenge for the Jim Ryan Memorial Cup a trophy that we would dearly love to win. Our opponents will be either Lisgoold or Cloyne which will be decided during the week. We have had a fantastic league campaign and 4 championship games thus far captained by Joe Deane. While football takes second place in the eyes of some this group of lads from our first outing in Cobh in Febuary have done the club proud. For the likes of selectors Noel Long, Caoimhin O'Driscoll, Declan Fogarty and Dennis Barry this has been a fantastic year. With only one more hurdle to jump and hopefully a historic day for the club we wish the lads and the management team the very best of luck on the day.

Last Tuesday night our U21 team in the first round of the championship took on Carrig na Bhfear in Lisgoold where under foot conditions were not suitable for good hurling, credit to both teams on an outstanding performance. We went in at the break 4 points up and in command but Carrig na Bhfear with the wind at their backs pegged us back which led to an intense finish where we managed to come away with a one point win. Final score Killeagh 0-13 Carrig na Bhfear 0-12.

Senior Hurling League - On Thursday evening Killeagh hosted Ballinhassig in our second last league game. This win puts us top of the table and into a league semi final. It was an entertaining game of hurling which saw some great individual scores and a good all round team performance. The final scorline read Killeagh 4-23 Ballinhassig 1-13. Our final game will be against Na Piarsig in the not too distant future.

Congratulations to our Junior A Footballers on reaching the Junior A football final. We were probably labelled with the favourites tag but to be fair to Carrigtohill they really put it up to us and there was never much to separate the sides during the duration of the game. But goals win games and we got 3. Midways through the second half we were in front by 8 points but Carrigtohill never gave up and chipped away at our lead to leave a nail biting finish and 1 point the difference. The final score was Killeagh 3-5 Carrigtohill 1-10. The final is now fixed for the 13th of September in Youghal at 6pm.

Killeagh took on Erin's Own on Sunday evening in this quarter final in Ballynoe. Last Wednesday night saw us take another 2 points in the league when we played Newtownshandrum in Killeagh. This gives us 17 points and a second place in the league with eirns own ahead by 1 point. Both sides attacked this game from the start, which was a joy to watch fast, open hurling. There was never much between both teams until a high ball from Mark Landers was dropped into the back of the neck. This game turned in our favour, young guns Andy Welsh and Sean Long also rattled the net. While newtownshamrum attacked, our defence stood firm and centre field controlled the game right to the end. GOLF CLASSIC
Our golf classic took place over the weekend. 121 teams enjoyed a wonderful round of golf at the picturesque Youghal golf club. This classic raises much needed funds for pairc ui chinneide development. In times of recession, we lost many a sponsor and team but our golf classic committee worked very hard to replace them and make it as successful as any other year under the watchful eye of Ray Rochford. This year we were lucky to get 2 main sponsors: Rochford and Kenneally engineers, Fermoy Nissan, and the Mace shop, thanks to Pat McCarthy. We sincerely thank both sponsors. A special thanks also to the sponsors of the wonderful prizes and to all the teams who took part. Your efforts won't go unnoticed in our club. Course winners on 97 points were General Electronic Alarms sponsored by Donal Harnedy. Second were Premier Service Station, the all ladies team, and third was Paddy Coleman's team. Again, a big thanks to everyone concerned, and we hope to see you all again next year.

28/6/09

Congratulations to the Junior A hurling team on their hard earned win over Fr. O'Neill's in Copper Raleigh in Youghal on Saturday last. This was our first championship outing of 09. While both teams traded scores in the opening half Noel O'Connor's goal separated the sides at half time. This was a lead we never relinquished even tho Fr. O'Neill's did hit a purple patch and closed the game down to 3 points. We held on to win on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-9. We now look forward to the next round.

Junior B hurling league
On Sunday morning we played Watergrasshill in the league in Killeagh. This well contested game of hurling saw very little to separate both sides, Watergrasshill having the upper hand at half time. With the wind at our backs in the second half we picked off some good scores. Then entered the Prodigal Son in the form of substitute Micheal "Fong" Byrne at full forward who not long on the field scored our only goal of the game. Watergrasshill came back at us and picked off some good scores but when the final whistle blew one point was difference. We ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-10 0-12.

St. Finbarr's with the wind advantage in the opening half scored 3 points in the opening quarter before Joe scored 2 to open our account. Scores from Brendan, Eoin and Joe again concluded our tally for the first half. Half time score :Killeagh 0-5 St. Finbarr's 0-7.
The opening of the second half saw us go in front by 2 points with scores from Kieren Lane (2), John O'Connor and Brendan Barry. Both sides traded scores for the first 20 minutes before a mix up in the Killeagh defence saw the Barr's score the only goal of the game. Killeagh quickly re-aserted themselves with scores from Eoin Loughlin, Joe Budds and Joe Deane and should have gone further ahead but 2 great strikes by Joe Budds were well saved by the Barr's keeper. On the stroke of full time we were 2 points up but within the four minutes of injury time the Barr's scored 2 points to level the game. Full time score: Killeagh 0-17 St. Finbarr's 1-14.

Junior A Hurling
On the 2nd of June the junior hurlers travelled to Carrignavar to take on Carrignavar in junior A league. This is another team striving for perfection this year unbeaten so far in the league and topping the table. In the first half both sides traded scores and there was never much separating the sides. Half time score: Killeagh 0-8 arrignavar 0-6.
Second half started much the same until a long clearance from Mark Landers inside his own half seemed to find its way into the back of the Carrignavar net. But Carrignavar plugged away and a penalty which was initially saved on the line was scored from the rebound. But Killeagh had done enough to see us win out on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-11.

Junior A Football Championship
Glenbower Rovers 3-10 Erins Own 0-03

For the third time this year in the Jim Ryan Cup both sides lined out in Midletion on Sat evening for the quarter final. With the wind at our backs in the opening half Davy Kelleher opened our account with a fine long range point. We were a little rusty in the opening ten minutes before Padraig, Mark, Sean and Joe got on the score sheet. Erins Own tacked on two to stay in touch. Andy Walsh entered the fray for the injured Davy Kelleher and made immediate impact scoring a well taken goal to see us go in at the break 1-05 to 0-02. The breeze died down for the second half and our defence stood firm as Erins Own tried to get back in the game but Steven Murphy got on the end of a long ball from centre field and knocked it to the back of the net. Minutes later Mark Landers broke through the Erins Own defence and slotted home a well taken goal to kill off the game as a contest. Joe, Steven, Sean and Andy added five points between them to see us advance to the semi finals where we will meet Carrigtohill. Dates to be anounced. Well done to all concerned.

Killeagh 3-15 Bride Rovers 0-16

Our first round championship game on Sunday 3rd of May saw us play impressively both on as individuals and as a team and this richly deserved victory shows we will still be a force to be reckoned with for the championship ahead. Eoin Loughlin was next on the scoresheet scoring 1-2 in close succession and when Andy Walsh hit the back of the net we were 8 points to the beter at half time with the score board reading 2-6 to 0-4.
We held on to our lead throughout the second half with points from Joe Deane, John Fitzgerald, Sean Long and Eoin Loughlin. Our defence was solid and worked tirelessy to the end to prevent Bride Rovers attack and hold our lead. Andy Walsh goaled again to extend our lead and with a further two points from Joe Deane we had secured our victory on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-16. Both sides traded early scores with Joe Deane netting early in the first half. We went in at half time 1-7 to Blackrock's 0-8. We started well in the second half with some long range points and excellant defending but failed to put real daylight between us until substitute Larry Colins goaled. Glenbower Rovers 0-10 vs Erin's Own 1-7

On Wednesday night the men from Glenbower travelled to Youghal for the first round of the Junior A Football Championship with Erin's Own our opponents. Glenbower unbeaten so far in this years league we were hoping our winning streak would continue into championship. A few injury worries saw Noel and Kevin and the lads have to jig things around a bit. We didn't get the dream start we were hoping for when Shane was blinded by the lights and the high dropping ball ended up in the back of the net. Erin's Own tacked on another point from a close range free before Kieren Lane opened our account. Joe Deane and John O'Connor brought us to three before two superb long range scores from Kieren Lane saw us go in at half time Killeagh 0-5 Erins Own 1-4.
Impact substitute Kevin O'Connor opened our scoring for the second half. Kieren Lane added another superb point to see us level before being stretchered off with a knee injury. Chances went to begging and both teams traded points, two points from Joe Deane and two outstanding saves from goalkeeper Shane Scully keeping Killeagh in touch. A point by Erin's Own on the stroke of full time meant we thought the show was over but the last kick of the ball saw Sean Long level the match to justify a replay. Date and venue of replay to be announced.

Ger Collins and John O'Connor added to the tally before Joe Deane added 1-2 to see us go in at half time 2-4 to 1-2 up. Our shooting in front of the posts left us down at times but scores from Kevin O'Connor, Sean Long and Rory Crowley kept us in front. St.Catherines pressed forward on several occasions but the defence from our back six was too strong with Timmy Murphy making vital interceptions at corner back.
